Put another way, in online content, a niche is akin to your culinary speciality. This distinct flavour sets you apart from the buffet of generic blogs. It's a cosy corner of the digital world where you can cater to a specific audience, sharing your expertise and passion.

Yes I could go on all day with analogies - here's some more, just to get my point across :-)

  • Your business niche is like your unique musical genre. It's the rhythm that resonates with your target audience.
  • Your business niche is like your personal garden. It's the space where you nurture your passions and cultivate a loyal following.
  • Your business niche is like your artistic signature style. It's the mark of authenticity that distinguishes you from the crowd.
  • Your business niche is like your personal style icon. It's the embodiment of your values and the essence of your brand.

Hopefully you get how importance finding your niche really is, especially in the vast digital landscape that is the world wide web! By honing your expertise and catering to a specific audience, you can establish yourself as a thought leader and attract a loyal following.

Embrace the Niche Discovery Journey

Finding the right niche is not a one-size-fits-all process. It's a journey of self-discovery, market exploration, and continuous learning. Embrace the process, experiment with different ideas, and refine your niche as you gain insights and experience. Remember, discovering your perfect business niche is not a destination but a continuous learning and growth journey.

What is a Niche?

In online business, a niche is a specific area of focus within a broader market. It's about identifying people with common interests, problems, or needs and tailoring your products or services to address those specific concerns.

To put it in simpler terms, a niche is:

  • A small part of a larger market with particular needs or interests
  • An area of expertise where you can share your knowledge and help others
  • A subject that ignites your curiosity and keeps you engaged
  • A topic that others are interested in and want to learn more about

Choosing the Right Niche for You

Keep Looking Quote by Steve Jobs

Choosing the right niche is the answer to your question 'what business can I start?' It's also a decision that can make or break your entrepreneurial journey, transforming you from a wallflower to a star of the digital dance floor.

"The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle." – Steve Jobs.

Step-by-Step Niche Selection:

Niche selection process - step by step

Before answering the question 'what business can I start?' and dive headfirst into the vast ocean of online business, take a moment to go through these action steps and ponder the crucial questions within:

  1. Identify Your Passions: What sparks your passion? What topics make your heart sing, and your mind dance? Choose a niche that ignites your curiosity, not force you to feign enthusiasm for something because it has high ticket value. (However, finding a niche that drives your passion for action and has a high price point is always a bonus!)

  2. Brainstorm a List of your Passions and Interests: What are you good at? What do you enjoy learning about? Talk to people in your target audience for their feedback and suggestions about what they might see you succeed at. This will help refine your niche and create content people want to know from you.

  3. Assess Your Skills and Knowledge: What are you good at? What expertise can you share with others? Leveraging your existing skills and knowledge will provide a strong foundation for your niche selection.

  4. Research your Potential Niches: Assess if there is a demand for your knowledge and expertise. Use online tools like Google Trends and social media to gauge interest. Ensure there is sufficient demand for your chosen niche. Research online communities, forums, and social media groups to measure interest and engagement in your potential place. Are you the sole lover of antique button collecting, or do you belong to a thriving community of fellow enthusiasts? Knowing your audience is critical to crafting content that resonates.

  5. Assess Your Competition: Can you navigate the treacherous waters of a saturated niche, or would you prefer to carve out your own tranquil reef? Understanding the competitive landscape is essential for success.

  6. Work out your niche profitability factor: While sharing your love for shiny blue seashells is admirable, it might not fill your bank account with gold doubloons. Evaluate the monetization potential of your niche.

Many aspiring niche-seekers embark on this quest with starry eyes, convinced that their niche is waiting for them like a Cinderella slipper, ready to whisk them away to a life of riches and adoration.

However, the harsh reality often hits them like a rogue wave, leaving them stranded on an island of obscurity, their blog about exotic sea shells attracting only a handful of fellow molluscan enthusiasts.

What comes next in the niche selection process?

"The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty: not knowing what comes next." – Ursula K. Le Guin

Follow Your Passion

Follow your childhood dreams

With the increased responsibilities of adulthood, life takes over, and dreams are put on hold.

My dream was to be a lorry driver. But that didn't last long, and then I wanted to be an actress. I lived for writing plays and creating storylines with dramatic imagery to go with it! Strangely enough, in my early 20s, I became a driver for DHL, and then 10 years later, my passion for drama manifested as I qualified as a Llamada improv actor and went on to do several plays for the Purbeck Players. (An aficionado theatre company in Swanage, England)

With creative art left on my childhood bucket list, I went on to embrace the digital world. My creative side exploded with new computer technology in the late 1990s. I devoured every tech morsel. I became an expert in digital marketing before the term existed. I sold websites to companies that didn't even know what a website was. Shortly after, in 2003, I discovered SBI.

I became an agency almost overnight. I've been helping people find their niche for over 20 years, most going on to create very successful businesses. I built several websites of my own, too. (Rabbits, vegan recipes and sustainable furniture, to name a few.)

Now, realising how all-encompassing SBI is (especially with the birth of TAI - SBI's Transformative AI Assistant), I have found my perfect niche: PassivAi.com is a dynamic education platform that helps people generate passive income online by leveraging the power of AI.

So no, my art is not on the walls of the Tate Gallery, and my words are not on The Times Best Seller list. But I'm sharing my knowledge about SBI and AI with people worldwide, and perhaps more importantly — I'm loving it. I jump out of bed every morning and smile at the thought of an exciting, creative day ahead.

One of the advantages of choosing your perfect profitable niche is that when you do it right, you can earn enough income not to have to work on your business every day. Yes, passive income is best! But that's another story.
